First, I have to apologize for my long absence. By the time I finish reading my quota of applications each night, I've lost any pretension I ever had to wit or coherence. I'll be blogging again - yay! - but there may not be any photos for a while. Standards must be lowered.
The upshot is that despite the insane schedule and the lack of proper meals and the length of time it's been since I've read a real book, I am totally in the right line of work.
Why? Because even in my grumpiest mood, on my nineteenth cup of tea, I am still completely energized by a good application. Just when I think I can't stand to read another essay, I open one that hooks me on the very first line. Just when I am convinced that every teacher recommendation in existence uses the words hardworking and diligent, there is another that knocks my socks off with the time and care expended to produce it. There are always surprises.
While it's always a little difficult to explain the all-encompassing nature of reading season to anyone who hasn't lived through it (my parents know the drill by now: phone calls are simply to confirm my continued existence; chatting is for April), Raissa came up with the idea to have our staff come up with a fill-in-the-blank for "It must be reading season." Can you guess who's who?
"My right hand's aching so much that I've learned to use the mouse with my left hand. It must be reading season."
"When the only outfits I've worn this week feature yoga pants, it must be reading season."
"Today, a walk was equal to speed walking and speed shopping at Costco. Hooray for a vat full of salad and a little bit of cardio! It must be reading season."
"Am I supposed to use affect or effect in this sentence? It must be reading season."
"Thank God for reading season. I need to curb my appetite, and sitting in my chair for 11 hours a day does the trick. Did I forget to feed the dogs?"
More soon (promise!) but now it's back to reading.
Thanks for the update, Colleen. I figured your lack of blogging was due to the mountain of apps that you and the rest of the HMC admissions staff were working through. I miss your blogs, but I know you'll be back in the saddle after April 1st. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI find that drinking a hot cup of tea helps me stay alert and active when I am doing homework. Merlin knows how harder your job is so drinking a hot beverage might help.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait until April 1st to hear from my first-choice school. :D
